2001 rear end makes clicking

hi need help not sure what the noise from my 2001 gt rearend is making .
you put in drive you get a click or clank sound . so if you go from reverse to drive it clanks but no noise when driveing or turning,no hum or nothin baffled. is it a common problem? something not to worry about it has made this sound for long time. just louder when reverse to drive and vise versa. please help if you can.

My 2003 had a clunk in the drive and if I really wanted to hear it I could give it some gas and then let off and then give it gas and let off and it would clunk each time. The Ford dealership could hear the clunk but claimed it was within tolerances and so claimed they couldn't do anything about it. So I just clunked along. Actually sounds like some play in something, as though they could put some shims in it somewhere and fix it but maybe my clunk is different that your click?!

it happens when i put into drive. also it happens if i go from reverse to drive. its an automatic

My 93 did the same thing from Day One. It went away when I had the rear end gears upgraded to a higher ratio. The owner of my performance shop says he sees it fairly regularly. The production tolerances aren't as tight as they could be.
