I had to change mine also. I did not put back any shims. And no problems at all.
I have a 65 Stang with 289 and C4 trans. Had to replace the starter(original) with a new one. After I removed the bolts and was pulling it out several thin washer fell out. I now know they are spacer shimes. I have been trying to put them on the new starter in different combinations, one on each bolt or two on one bolt. How do I determine what I need or how many. I know if the spacing is not correct I can damage the flywheel and the new starter........help.

if you have the correct starter then there is no need for shims. parts books are notorious for mixing up the auto & manual starter p/n's.
