New Nashville member....Fuel Sending unit adventure!
Been here for 18 years, but recently decided to join after owning my 8th Mustang!! I'm currently working on a 1966 Mustang GT that came stock with a lot of options and most of them are still original! When I got the car, the fuel gauge wasn't working. I've never worked on cars, but I decided to get my hands dirty on my 65 and 66's.
Let me tell you, I've learned so much in the last couple months about these cars! first, a new transmission mount can fix that terrible oscillation while cruising at 50-55 mph. My 66 is smooth as silk now! Also, you have to take the tank out to change the fuel sending unit!! I know that probably sounds obvious, but we thought we could do it up on ramps. After 2 days and four times filling and emptying the tank due to leaks, I'm convinced there's no other way!
Also, I got the sending unit from O'Reilly's, and the O'ring is beveled to fit the groove in the tank. It can only be installed one way, which is why we couldn't get the leak stopped. Finally found success by removing the tank. I've so enjoyed getting to know how to work on these great cars, and look forward to meeting fellow Music City "stangers!! By the way, who says musicians can't work on cars!!
