First day Mustang

Hi,

I'm looking at a 1964 Mustang made on April 17th, which I believe is the birthday of the Mustang.
The car is equipped with a 289 and 4-speed manual. Condition is good and original with matching numbers. Would you say the fact it's a first day Mustang increases the value of the car and if so, how much? 10%, 30%, 100%...?

Well the Mustang was introduced to the public on April 17, 1964 so this particular car wasn't made on the first day of production. If it was a true first day production Mustang I think it would add quite a bit of value since there were actually some differences between first day cars and the regular 64 1/2. However, its obviously still a very cool date to be associated with a Mustang but I wouldn't pay any more personally for a car made on April 17. Hopefully some others will chime in though.

March 9th is the generally accepted date that mass production began at DAP in '64.

Didn't the first run Mustangs have a 260 V8 in them . . . if so, and this is a 289, then it was made quite some time later.

both the 'F' code 260 & the 'D' code 289 ran at the same time.

I agree it is pretty cool but it is certainly not the first.

I am also "partial' to Mustangs built on April 17 - as we have a 1967 K-code fastback built at dearborn on April 17, 1967.

Maybe we can survey MCA members and see how many we all own that were built on APRIL 17, ???? - the anniversary day of the first public introduction of the Mustang on April 17, 1964?

My K-code was actually built on April 17, 1967 per Kevin Marti report "Your car was actually produced on April 17, 1967 -- on schedule."

Of course the date we see on the door tag was not the date the car was built built instead the sate Ford guessed it would be built. Looking at other documents that show both the projected build dates and the real build dates on other years and plants we see that the door tag date was rarely the real build date. Unfortunate since I've got a Boss 302 what has a projected build date that is my 14th birthday
