Info Needed for Applying for Collector Vehicle Stratus

Hi all,

I am a new member and proud owner of a 1992 LX 5.0. Car is original and unmolested with only 60K miles. I am the second owner and would like to apply for collector Status through the NJ Motor Vehicle Commission, however, they are requesting "evidence from either the manufacturer, a recognized car club (on letterhead) or collector organization that the vehicle applying for status was issued in limited edition quantity or that a limited quantity of the original production run remains." So, I emailed Ford with no luck. Any suggestions on what to do? I have seen other mustangs with this status. I know that the 1992 5.0 LX was the last year for the Fox Body LX model because in 1993 they only produce the limited edition models and the convertables. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Can MCA help with a letter to get this status?

Do you have collector car insurance on your LX? When I applied several years back, I went to DMV with collector insurance policy and membership cards from my local Mustang Club and MCA to get this status on my 96 SVT Cobra. I dealt with the DMV office in Medford on Route 70.

Yes, I have it insured through Grundy's. I just have to wait for my MCA membership info I guess. Any idea how long that takes?

Doesn't take long at all. I renewed my membership at Carlisle June 3rd and received my membership packet around the 15th. New member may take a little longer than that. Welcome to MCA and Good Luck with NJ DMV.

When you break it down into exterior color/interior trim combo's, the numbers probably get low enough to qualify for this NJ DMV collector status.

Do these production numbers really qualify for "limited production"? They seem pretty high.

Actually the state of NJ is not interested in production numbers in the application of Collector Car status. The owner pays a fee for a special registration. What the Collector Car registration does is exempt the vehicle from NJ emissions inspection by limiting the amount of miles driven to 3000 per year or 6000 over the 2 year inspection time frame. The owner must still go to a State facility and the vehicles odometer reading will be documented for future reference. The owner will receive a printout to keep in the car and a collector car inspection sticker. A few years ago the state couldn't find my car in the system, but because I had all of the documents to prove the vehicles status I had no problem. I think the state of NJ would except almost any vehicle as a "collector car"

I've never tried to register as a Collector car (I use the Historic registration), but I guess you are saying that they don't fully follow their own rules (which doesn't surprise me, since it is a government agency). It sounds like you didn't have to provide any proof that the car is a limited production car, even though their documentation indicates it is required.
