    Engine Identification

I have a 1965 Mustang with a 1966 200 Inline 6 engine. The engine block denotes that it is a '66 block but just above the C6DE numbering is the word "SPECIAL" in the casting. The lettering is raised and unlike my wife's '66 200 CI engine. There is evidence the car had been in California for some time judging from the California newspaper jammed behind the headliner and the blocked off emissions ports on the cylinder head. I've asked around and no one has been able to tell me what is so "special' about this engine. I was given generic guesses as to what it means but I want to know what's the difference in this engine as opposed to a regular 200 block. I have pictures I can send to anyone interested in helping.

    Thanks in advance.

    Additional Information:
Block ID: C6DE-6015-B (Appears to be a standard 1966 Block)
Intake ID: C7DE-6090-A (Appears to be a standard 1967 Intake/Exhaust)
    Exhaust Manifold ID: D3DE-9430BA

One note is the intake rocker arms have adjustment nuts on them at the push rod. The push rods are solid and I believe the lifters are not hydraulic. For some reason I keep dropping push rods out from under the rocker arms and the engine does not run smoothly and never has. When I bought the car the engine seemed to lack power on take off, much worse than my wife's '66 with the same engine.

    Engine Identified

Someone from another forum notified me that one of the service manuals he had seen denoted the 'Special' was for either the Pursuit or Super Pursuit motor. The Pursuit engine was the 170 CI version and the 200 CI the Super Pursuit. The engines were for the Ford Falcons and it appears that many of them ended up overseas. The Super Pursuit engine apparently had a few more horses and a little different compression ratio. I'm still waiting to see if there were any other differences but as for now, it appears the mystery has been solved.

It would be interseting to know the casting date, the assembly date stamping, and the engine tag data on this one.

Tell me where to look on the engine and I'll try to supply the info.

The casting date will be on the right side of the block by the casting number.

The assembly stamping date will be on the left side of the block all the way forward on the top of the protrusion where the road draft tube used to hook into.

The engine tag (if it is still there) is an aluminum rectangular tag that was attached with the coil mounting bolt.

    The only other numbers were:
Under the FOMOCO on the side of the engine with the block casting is 6MI3 or 6M13. Its rusty and hard to see. On the other side of the block below the coil is the number 15 and the tag is long gone.

Well the block was cast December 13 1966 for a 1967 model year car or possible replacement item. The stamping (not casting) I talked about is all the way forward on the front upper left side of the block just below the cylinder head. There will be a machined smooth pad that you will probably need to scrub off with something like WD40 to see the stamping.

6M227 is the number on the block.

Okay then, your block was actually assembled into a complete engine on December 22, 1966. I think if you check the last digit again, you will find it to be a Z vice a 7. The meaning of SPECIAL cast into the block is still puzzling. Was this block by any chance cast with a dual bellhousing bolt pattern?

Standard bellhousing bolt pattern. It has a 3 speed manual behind it right now.
