    1966 289 Hipo Engine

Did any 1966 K code mustangs come from the factory with just a 289 Ford 4-bbl Carb that are not considered a HIPO? I am looking at a car that I believe has a HIPO engine. It has heads that have the number "19" cast on the head, which I am told indicate HIPO heads? But the thing that I am confused about is that the engine tag has a the following info First line: 289 C 66 10, Second line: 5-J 250-S. From my research on http://www.fordification.com/tech/engineIDtags.htm, the 245 and 246 codes are listed as 289 High Performance, but the 250 code not say High Performance. Also is any other way to tell it is a real hipo from the outside of the engine?

No - not for sure. Exterior inspection will only confirm if you have some of the parts that were used on a 289 High performance engine. And even after disassembly you are likely to have a collection from various engines since so many of these were rebuilt and modified at some point.

    Hipo heads

Jeff, thanks for your reply. Forgive me if I ask some questions that may stupid. Is it possible to run hipo heads on an "A" code 289? Did Both the "A" & "K" codes have manual chokes?

no such thing as a stupid question. the only stupid question is the one that is not asked. we're here to help & learn from each other....... yes you can run hipo heads on an 'a' code. only the k engines had a manual choke.

    Hipo choke

Fred, thanks for the help. Where should the manual choke cable be on the carb, do you know of any site with pictures of this card that shows the choke cable? Also can a hipo have factory or dealer installed AC , I thought that all hipos did not have AC? Thanks, David

no factory installed a/c on hipo's. choke linkage on carb is specific to the hipo setup. a good website for info is here http://www.hipomustang.com the message board is currently down for repairs. when it gets fixed please check it out.......best site out there for hipo info. you may also want to check here too http://www.concoursmustang.com lots of mca judges on that site.

I'm no expert but I reached driving age in 1967. I followed all the specs mainly on Ford because my dad was a Ford man and the fruit always falls close to the tree. My 8th grade class took a field trip to the Ford plant at River Rouge complex. We toured an area where engines were being assembled (mostly by women). Then we were led to the final assembly were the first 1964 Mustangs were rolling off the line every 60 seconds. It was a great time living in Detroit.

As I recall, the Mustang was offered with a 4bbl carb on 2 versions of the 289. We all remember the hi-po with the hi compression pistons, and the solid lifter cam, rated at 271 hp. There was also a 289 4bbl carb rated 225 hp. The 2bbl was 200 hp. This is all from my foggy memory. Hope it helps.
