If you are looking for just the sound of a big cam, you might look at Comp Cams thumper series. They have a little bit more of valve overlap that creates the sound. The balance of your exhaust system components will have more of the effect than the cam. Small block fords don't respond with the same type of cam sounds as your buddies with the small block Camaros.

You'll get lots of comments on this I suspect.

Your best bet for a little more horse power without lots of lope would be the Edlebrock Performer Plus. I believe you can run this cam with stock valve springs and not have to heavy up the top end...I put a comp cams nostalgia 271 cam in my fastback....this cam is old school and requires heavier valve springs, but the sound is K-code all the way....and the performace is very '60's....
