    No Umbrellas at National Shows

I went to the Ocean State National last weekend. I was 3 weeks out of knee surgery and on Antibiotics. I was blind sided by the "New" rule of on No canopies or umbrellas, even hand held. I was in the mist of cleaning my car and was holding it to shade myself from the sun as per doctors orders. I told this to the wonderful person who told me I had to put it away. So now I'm stuck. I can't finish cleaning my car because I can not stay out in the sun even after taking a bath in sunscreen. I've won 6 firsts with my car and received a 3rd this time around. This I'm not complaining about,I knew it wasn't as clean as it could have been.
My question is, Will the MCA cover a persons medical expense for sunburns because all shows are held out in the open and hopefully on sunny days?
I know why there shouldn't be any canopies on the show field, but hand held umbrellas? Not like it's going to fly away from a persons hand.
I believe the "New" rule, which by the way wasn't written in any of the show material, should be modified to allow hand held umbrellas.

I'm sorry you got 3rd . My wife and I got up at 5am and was on the field at 530am . We got done buy 930am just maybe you need to get out sooner . I was at a car show and UNBRELLA hit a car . What if it happen to you not good . We spend a lot of time and money on our cars . We need RULES and I know we don't like them but we need them . So get up with the SUN and you well get 1st place .

Not a new rule. Our first show many years ago, we had umbrellas hooked to our chairs and walked away and came back to be told by the guy next to us that someone came over and told him to tell us we could not have them. Was embarrassed and learned our lesson. Since then, we have noticed that a lot of times the rule is not enforced.

Thats a bummer, I know tough being out in the sun especially after a medical situation like you had but it has been a rule for good reasons for a long time. I have seen some get away from folks right next to cars as they were enjoying the show and swung around and smacked the car... Not good...

Rules concerning umbrellas, tents, popups, etc. being erected/used at National or Regional shows are enacted and enforced by the host clubs. There is no recommendation or directive in the MCA National Show Guidelines related to this issue. MCA does not enforce rules, such as this, that are invoked by the host club and can only make recommendations.

At my home club's Regional Shows we state no popups, tents, or umbrellas attached to tables or chairs are allowed on the show field with the cars. They can be erected adjacent to to the show field well clear of any cars. A lot of good ole common sense goes a long way here. Hand held unbrellas would be evaluated on a case by case basis.

Concerning umbrellas, I have not heard before of hand held umbrellas being restricted as is noted here, but the wind could possibly jerk it out of a person's hand and potentially damage a car. Umbrellas attached to tables or chairs can very easily be carried into the show field along with what ever they are attached to if left unattended. Again enforcing these requirements is at the descretion of the host club.

I have seen first hand the damage that items such as tents, chairs, popups and umbrellas carried onto a show field by the wind can be reek. It isn't pretty and can leave someone liable for the damage done.

Probably the worst case I have ever seen was in the mid 1990's at the Cherokee National in the North Carolina side of the Smokie Mt national park, I think the location is now a Casino. It was down in a valley and a whirl wind came up and grabbed a big beach umbrella and took it up around 300 feet in the air, and the old adage what goes up must come down, it did right on the top of a show car. Even last year at the Jacksonville national a hand held umbrella got away in a gust of wind, it never came down within eyesight, flew over the top of the mall. A short time later one of the vendors around the perimeter had his heavy duty pop up blow down on top of his own dislpay car. Regardles how careful a person can be, things do happen.

Sometimes a big wide brimmed jungle hat does just as good as an umbrella.

Besides umbrellas, it's the people with strollers, guys with chains hanging off their jeans, and folks who bring their leashed dogs onto the show field that all make me hold my breath while they are near the cars.
