1965 Silver Side Emblems or Red,White & Blue
We have a 1965 (June 19) Caspian Blue coupe. The side emblems were stolen in 1978. We think that they were all silver. The replacement ones we bought in 1982 did not fit, and they were red, white and blue. We have only seen one other all silver emblem. It was on a 1964 1/2 at a show...but we couldn't tell if maybe the red, white and blue just faded. Anyone know the answer? Did they have all silver side emblems in 1965 on some cars?

Is it possible the all silver emblems on the 64.5 was on the black "Sparkly" coupe shown in modified class?
Don't know if it is the car you mention, but Sparkly intentionally left the colors off the emblem as part of his modifications.

FYI there is a small fit and finish difference between the earlier emblems and the ones being sold as NOS currently. Do not go by the part # on the box, but the # on the back. If you hold a C4ZA / C5ZZ next to a C8ZA it is readily apparent, especially with the translucence of the colors. Good luck finding the C4, took me 4 years to get just the 16229 left one that is required for the grill on a 65 Shelby. I have some used ones, and see the used ones at swaps, not sure how you would re-chrome one without distorting the shape, and then the paint colors would need to be matched.
Good luck.

Thanks for writing. Your response was shown at our family Christamas as we have formed a "club" around the Mustang that now crosses three generations of drivers (grandkids are just starting to drive).
I remember at the MCA Judge show in Bellevue, WA in July the car was a dark purple with "glitter" type paint. Not sure what you mean by "Sparkly" made the modifications. Is "Sparkly" a class of car or a person or just how you are refering to the owner?

How do we know what part # to order when the original side emblems were stolen? Is the "C4" a part type and the #16229 the specific part number. Do I look in catalogs to get the information and then keep hunting at shows for the original part.
And, did they make silver ones or is this still up for research. Thanks for writing. It was cool to call up the response at our family Christmas for the grandkids to see. We hope to pass the "love" of Mustangs down into the cyberspace generation so when we are all gone...the Mustang in our family we live on.

You may find a reproduction most suitable and affordable for your needs. New OEM Ford emblems with the C4ZB casting numbers on the back demand about $150-250 each due to their rarity. They simply were not serviced as much as the later large pin replacements.
As far as I know, all of the emblems were intended to be painted with red/white/blue paint. The "silver" emblems that you remember were most likely original emblems that had the paint faded out.
