    QUESTIONS: Division VII – Modified 1964 ½ – 2010

    New to MCA rules, so could someone answer a couple questions in the modified class:

    If driven to and from national shows (not trailered). Burden of proof is the owner’s responsibility*

    Is this quote saying that if you want to enter into the modified class you must prove you drove to show?
    Undercarriage judged and under carriages not judged classes will be offered
    Is this statement saying, at national shows you have two types of modified classes? Meaning one modified class where under carriages are judged and one class where the under carriage is not judge?

    Do I understand the modified class correctly, whether its a regional or national show and you want to enter into the modified class you must:
    1. drive to show and prove it
    2. have a car that has been largely modified
    3. you will be judge on workmanship, cleanliness, detail
    4. car will be judged from top to bottom, meaning: engine, interior, paint, exterior add ons, trunk and undercarriage
    5. a displayed list of modification is useful and recommended

    There are two class's for modified if you trailered your car to the show the undercarriage will be judged for cleanliness and modifications. If you drive it to the show the undercarriage is not judged.

    The rules for the modified division have driven classes with the option to have your undercarriage judged or not judged in addition to the trailered class in which the undercarriage is judged. At the national level shows the classification advisor and her assistants can generally look at the car and quickly determine if the car was driven or trailered. If there is reason or cause to think that it may not have been driven to the show, is when the owner has the burden of proof in proving the car was driven to the show.

    The car does not have to be largely modified to enter the modified class and do well. The car has to be awarded enough modification points, along with being awarded enough points for being clean with good workmanship and in good condition in each of the areas, interior, exterior, engine compartment, trunk and if judged the under carriage. Remember though the points awarded for modification only count for about 22 percent of the total awarded points with the remaining points being for cleanliness, workmanship and condition. Also each area has only a certain number of modification points up to a maximum that are awarded. That means if entry reaches the maximum number of modification points awarded and has additional modifications it will only be awarded up to the maximum in that area. This is the balance built in to the scoring that allows a car with fewer and simpler modifications to have a chance at an award. While a heavily modified car has to be clean, have good workmanship and be in good condition in order to earn an award. Detail does not enter into the judging, but one has to pay attention to the details of being very clean, in good condition and have better than average workmanship in order to be competitive.

    If the car is entered in a class that has the undercarriage judged then I guess you could say it would be judged from top to bottom. At a minimum all areas are looked at for cleanliness, workmanship, condition and the add ons in each area.

    The list of modifications if prepared before the show, the entry is awarded 9 points for having the list. Starting this year the entries whom the owners hand write a list at the TIME OF JUDGING will be awarded only 4 points for the list. The list of modifications are used by the judges to locate all visible modifications and ONLY THE VISIBLE modifications are awarded points based upon if the modification is simple, minor and major. Stating this year the points awarded for each modification have been revised, a simple modification will receive only 1 point, minor will be awarded 3 points and major will be awarded 8 points while a new category of modification called intermediate modification has been added and will be awarded 5 points. The changes to the rules have not been posted to the web site yet but will be in the near future.     Most local regional shows do not typically follow the National Show rules or classes. They usually only judge for cleanliness, workmanship and condtion. They may award points in the modified classes, if they have one.

    What Shorty is saying, in the modified classes you actually have three choices. If you have driven the car to the National show, you can enter a class that does not judge the undercarriage, or you can enter a class that will judge the undercarriage or the total car. If you trailer your car to the show, you will enter the trailered class where the complete car is judged. In the driven undercarriage class and the trailered class the car will be judged the same, the only difference between the two classies is that the point level that must be achieved to be awarded a trophy will be higher in the trailered class.

    Years ago, before the standard points system was used, cars were in competition against each other. It was very competetive, some would trailer their vehicles to their hotels and then drive them to the show site and claim they were driven to the show. It was difficult to compete against a true trailer queen. If they were questioned on being trailered or driven, the owner had to provide proof it was driven by gas receipts or mileage.

    Well Mike, Shorty and Don, Thanks for all your insight on modified! My thoughts to move to MCA for my 2011 car show season is definitely going to be a learning curve.
    So many rules to obey are going to be a challenge!
    I am use to going to a show and placing myself in modified. Displaying my ride to the best of my ability and to hopefully stand out in the modified class is the task at hand. My past experience of being judged, was to be scored from top to bottom to detail to cleanliness to workmanship to what the car was to what it is today and how you display ones creation, after all its a “Modified Car in a SHOW”
    I now understand that only 22 percent of ones transformation will be the modified max of ones score. So, if one transforms the entire car it has no bearing on one who let say just modified their engine and arrives in a stock pony.
    I am thinking if one car mods are only in the engine and the other is totally modified from front to back to inside to underside. It is going to be much simpler for the guy with a engine modified than the guy with a total modified car. Engine car will achieve his max modified point on engine only and then the rest of car is just judged for cleanliness and detail and the total modified will gather his max modified points as they judge the whole car. I am thinking the guy who only has to focus on an engine to gather his modified point will prevail.
    I also understand displaying your car with information like a car show stand, informing others of your ponies history or dealership literature, which offers fans to see what your pony use to be or mirrors to assist fans and judges, to view under a pony that sits a couple inches off the ground, these are deduction.
    Please dont take me wrong, I am not complaining, I am very happy to be a MCA member and I will learn your rules. I will have a lot to learn when attending a MCA event.
    I guess bottom line, when I think modified, I think "WOW Factor" like world of wheels or DUB shows or Good guys shows, when in the modified class, getting creative with your car and how you display it, is how it is judged!
